Revisit: Lunch at Sonny’s

Last week, Meredith shared a meal with friends at Sonny’s, and ever since then has been insisting that Map & Menu revisit one of her favorite lunches in town. Never one to say ‘no’ to a mid-day cocktail, and looking for another way to celebrate our recent Portland Phoenix nomination, I took her up on the suggestion, and we spent a leisurely lunch with some delicious drinks and fantastic food. Tandem Coffee Roasters

If you know me, you know that I enjoy my coffee. For me, at least, nothing kills the “why does work start before noon” or the “why did I eat so much at lunch” blues like a piping hot cup of the good stuff. But from my time working (and living) in dorm rooms, warehouses, and an ad agency, the cup of Joe I had become familiar with was little more than a flavorless caffeine conduit, from some sad, seldom-cleaned Mr. Coffee drip. New York, NY

There are few big cities in the US that do christmas as well as New York, so when Meredith needed to make a trip to the city fora shoot, we did the natural thing and made a Map & Menu weekend of it. In just over 36 hours, we covered a lot of ground, ate at some amazing restaurants, did some shopping, visited friends and family, and simply had a wonderful time. Continue reading New York, NY

Brunch at Vignola Cinque Terre

Meredith and I have always enjoyed the excellent design and ambiance of Vignola – with it’s large picture windows, exposed brick walls, cool Edison-style lighting, wine bottle fixtures, and ivy covered exterior, it’s a pretty excellent setting for a meal – but we hadn’t visited in quite a while, so when we heard that it had merged with its sister restaurant, to become Vignola Cinque Terre, we couldn’t resist dropping in for a little Sunday brunch to see how things had changed. Shop Tour: Sugar Tools

I popped into Sugar Tools for the first time one morning after wrapping up a quick photo shoot in Camden. The store’s ads in Maine Magazine always seem to catch my eye, so I couldn’t wait to kill some time in this darling little shop, just off the main street in one of my favorite towns in Maine. As you know by now, both Michael & I love a well-stocked home goods shop filled with interesting & inspiring objects. With its fun selection of products, displayed so wonderfully, Sugar Tools certainly fit the bill, and I fell in love with the shop almost instantaneously. Continue reading Shop Tour: Sugar Tools

Eventide Oyster Co.

Awhile back, while having dinner with a friend at Hugo’s, I couldn’t help but have my attention constantly wander to a scene I could see from our window seat. Over the course of a few hours, in the old Rabelais storefront next door, an artist meticulously hand-lettered a name onto the window. The deliberate speed and patience of the artist, and the fact that the owner of this new mystery location had even felt the need to chose the hand-lettered route over a quick decal, was more than enough to thoroughly pique my curiosity… Continue reading Eventide Oyster Co.

Hotel Crillon Le Brave

Meredith and I are firm believers that it’s hard to go wrong with a Relais & Châteaux property, and Hotel Crillon le Brave is far from an exception to the rule. With sweeping views of Mt. Ventoux, luxurious rooms, a warm and friendly staff, delicious food, and an unbelievable amount of Provencal charm, the hilltop property quickly climbed to the top of our favorites list, alongside quite a few of its sister properties.
